Beginning of academic delay – Seattle Public Schools

The decision for the return to school on Monday will be sent this weekend

We do not yet have an agreement with the Seattle Education Association (SEA).

The Seattle Public Schools (SPS) and SEA teams will negotiate throughout the weekend to reach an agreement on an educator contract.

On Saturday we will share an update with families and staff if school is in session on Monday.

We understand the challenges students and families face when schools are closed. We remain optimistic about our progress and are negotiating in good faith. We are doing everything we can to get students back into the classrooms.

Family Updates

Kindergarten and Preschool Day One Visits and Family Connections: We hope to hear more about Family Connection Visits and Back to School for Kindergarten and Preschool students soon. We will share an update as soon as possible.

Student meals: New locations from Monday, September 12. The student meal pickup location has been moved from SPS school sites to Seattle Parks and Recreation sites. Families can pick up free packed lunches from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We know that the continued postponement of the start of school is a challenge for our students, families and staff. We understand the confusion and uncertainty at this time.

No school Friday September 9

There will be no school on Friday September 9th. We are negotiating with the Seattle Education Association, but we don’t have an agreement yet.

We continue to negotiate in good faith and are doing everything we can to get students back into the classroom. We understand the challenges students and families face when schools are closed.

We will send updates to families and staff by 3 p.m. tomorrow regarding school for Monday. Please check your email, text message or voicemail for updates.

Family Updates

  • Student meals will continue to be provided at several school sites. Free packed lunches are available for all students and can be picked up from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • School and high school timetables will be available in The Source on Friday, September 9.
  • SPS Transportation The team continues to work with school bus vendors to ensure we are ready when the first day of school is announced. You can see yellow school buses on the streets of Seattle as bus drivers run prep runs.
  • Kindergarten and preschool‘ the first day of school is scheduled for Monday, September 12. The Early Learning Team is working on how the back to school delay may affect our youngest students. We will communicate any changes related to Family Connection visits and the start of kindergarten and preschool once the decision is made.

No school Thursday September 8

There will be no school on Thursday September 8th. We continue to negotiate with the Seattle Education Association, our union of educators. We don’t have an agreement yet.

We look forward to the start of the school year and understand the challenges students and families face when schools are closed.

Meals for students will be provided at several school sites. Free packed lunches are available for all students and can be picked up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

No school Wednesday September 7

Seattle Public Schools will not start school as scheduled on Wednesday, September 7, due to a planned work stoppage by the Seattle Education Association (SEA).

Meals for students will be provided at several school sites. Free packed lunches are available for all students and can be picked up from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are also reaching out to community child care providers to help support our families. We expect extracurricular athletics to continue, even if there is a back-to-school delay. We will post details on student meals, childcare and additional resources. Seattle Public Schools respect our educators and staff. We are optimistic that the negotiating teams will reach a positive solution for students, staff and families. Negotiations with SEA are ongoing. We look forward to starting school and welcoming students and staff for the 2022-23 school year.
