Georgian university leaders don’t seem to like teachers

In his response to the AAUP, MacCartney said, “I totally and strongly disagree with the findings of the report. … Most USG tenured professors perform at a high standard and indeed provide high quality educational experiences to students. However, within the ranks of our professors, we have a small number of professors who are permanent and who do not meet the expectations of providing a high quality educational experience according to their peers. It is unacceptable for an institution to learn about and fail to remedy a faculty’s unsatisfactory performance over time.

The AAUP report contains a warning that should worry any parent who wants a credible public university system for their children. The report states, “By removing the tenure protections from the U.S. government’s post-tenure review policy, the board has significantly differentiated Georgia’s university system from its peer systems, but not in a touchy way. improve its academic excellence, reputation or competitive advantage.

“It’s a black eye on us and a blow to our reputation,” said Matthew Boedy, professor at the University of North Georgia, chairman of the AAUP Georgia Conference. Boedy expects AAUP to censor the university system in early 2022, a dreaded statute that marks Georgia campuses as operating outside recognized principles of academic freedom and tenure.

Tenure has always been a thorn in state legislatures, especially in the South with its historic aversion to workplace protections. On the right, seniority has been attacked as lifelong job security that leads to decreased productivity. On the left, it is seen as a pillar of privilege since the rank of full professors is whiter and more masculine than the broader faculty.

About 45.1% of full-time college professors in the United States are tenured, up from 56.2% in 1993-1994. Tenure is awarded to professors who undergo a long, multi-stage review process that takes into account evaluations of teaching, academic service, research, and publications. Professors are established for the same reason as federal judges: to protect them from political interference and the machinations of administrators, donors and legislators.

In recent years, heads of state have not focused on Kindergarten to Grade 12 and higher education with many of their policies and budget cuts. This divide widened during COVID-19.

For exemple, Georgia College and State University faculty member James schiffman recently resigned, leaving a job he loved because he felt COVID-19 protocols were too lax. GCSU declined to comment, but acknowledged Schiffman’s resignation.

“I didn’t want to leave. I really enjoyed the teaching, but I’m not going to do something that I don’t think is in the best interests of the students, ”Schiffman said.

In reporting on professors’ protests against the lack of COVID-19 precautions, I sometimes get criticism from readers who argue that if professors don’t like USG policies, they should resign. The problem is, the professors have quit. A colleague of Schiffman’s resigned at the start of the semester due to COVID-19 concerns.

Schiffman regrets that his resignation leaves his department “in a wounded world.” I felt I really had no choice. The system has not given me the opportunity to set reasonable safety guidelines for my students.
