GR High School Obtains Funding for STEM Program

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids high school is one of only 16 in the state with funding for manufacturing and engineering education.

Grand Rapids Public Schools executive director of communications John Helmholdt said Innovation Central High School will receive about $300,000 over three years to create a manufacturing and engineering program. The money will also go towards equipment, curriculum, professional development, scholarships and STEM-focused activities.

Helmholdt explained that the Michigan State Legislature had approved a $6 million state appropriation that had been advocated by the SME Education Foundation and the Michigan Manufacturers Association to help invest in the talent pool of Michigan students.

“That funding is really a transfer that goes to the Small Business Education Foundation and then they invest in individual schools that apply for those funds,” Helmholdt said.

Innovation Central High School is the only school in Grand Rapids to receive these funds. Helmholdt added that they plan to incorporate these funds starting next school year.

“Because we already have a school that’s really into this STEM field, it’s going to be able to go with it and augment, support and expand, reinforce the things that we’re already doing to create those pathways for our students,” Helmholdt says.
