Houghton High School Choir Fundraiser Saturday | News, Sports, Jobs

HOUGHTON — The Houghton High School Choir will host a fundraising spaghetti dinner this Saturday, Feb. 12 from 4-7 p.m. at Houghton Elementary School, located at 203 W. Jacker Avenue, Houghton.

Dinner will include spaghetti, sauce, with and without meat and sides will include salad and garlic bread. Gluten-free pasta is available on request.

“More,” said Hillary Arundel, choir teacher, “We will also be holding a bake sale for those who wish to treat themselves.”

The choir members do several things to get money for the trip, but additional funds are needed.

“The dinner is intended to help students who need extra funds to make the trip”, said Arundel. “It’s an expensive trip, but it’s a worthwhile trip.”

The five-day trip will be both educational and fun, Arundel said. choir students will participate in a choral clinic at the Newcomb Department of Music at Tulane University. They will also visit Oak Alley Plantation, a historic plantation located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in the community of Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana. Students will also visit many New Orleans sites, including the French Quarter. They will also watch and listen to street musicians and, if possible, perform their own street performance. A special honor, the choir will also perform outside the WWII museum. The trip is scheduled for June 20-25, 2022.

Arundel said if additional fundraisers are needed, she will plan for them.

“I didn’t want the money to be the reason they couldn’t come” she said.

It will be a wonderful experience for them, Arundel said, as many students have never been outside the Upper Peninsula, or the furthest they have been is Green Bay.

“So just go somewhere they might not otherwise have the chance to see and experience,” said Arundel, “and music is a great tool to help them do that.”

Take-out and eat-in options are available at the fundraiser, she said. There will be live music performed by the choir and their families.

In order to know how much to expect, as well as gluten-free noodles and meatless sauce, people are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.

“Tickets are now available for purchase”, said Arundel. “Please see your friendly neighborhood choir member or stop by the elementary, middle or high school offices to purchase tickets. Everyone will need a ticket so that we can provide enough food. Limited tickets available at the door.
