IIM arrives in Pune, launch of course for professionals

Soon Pune will be home to another prestigious educational institution, the city’s first Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be established by the end of 2021.

IIM-Nagpur has decided to establish its very first satellite campus in Pune, which is a known educational center housing the best colleges across courses and universities, alongside the colleges and academies of the Indian Armed Forces. The campus will be located at the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), in Pune, with which School B will partner for its courses.

In June of this year, IIM Nagpur and CIRT, operating under the aegis of the Union’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, signed a collaborative memorandum of understanding, targeting skills-building programs for all stakeholders in road transport and industry.

If all goes well, the first Pune campus MBA program will be rolled out for the first class in December of this year, confirmed Dr Bhimaraya Metri, director of IIM-Nagpur, at the official launch of the campus in the town Tuesday.

This two-year Executive MBA course will be exclusively for professionals working in all fields. Professionals with at least three years of professional experience and a graduation score of over 50 percent are eligible to participate in this first course offered from the Pune campus.

“We are planning to have in-person classes for professionals in Pune during the weekends. The goal is to provide professionals with continuous learning and development opportunities, ”said Metri.

While planning a campus in Pune and the courses to be offered there, IIM-Nagpur conducted a survey of human resources managers within the city’s companies. Its findings revealed that the industry needed a more talented and skilled workforce, in addition to executives with leadership qualities suited to today’s digital age.

“As Pune is one of India’s top five computing centers and also an automotive hub, IIM-Nagpur hopes to secure a very good industrial partnership with the city’s businesses and industries. The idea is to link transportation management to the supply chain using tools such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and other advanced technologies, ”said CP Gurnani, President from IIM-Nagpur and Managing Director and CEO of Tech Mahindra.

IIM-Nagpur is also working on a curriculum design for its specialized course in Transportation Management, in consultation with CIRT and industry partners. The program design process is currently underway, said Rajendra Saner Patil, director of CIRT.

Over the next two years, the youngest of the IIM B schools in the country is also planning to start a full-time MBA course at its satellite campus in Pune. Short- and long-term courses will also be offered from Pune, along with a one-year specialized course in data science and management, IIM-Nagpur officials said.
