Is the national education policy focused on creating enlightened and responsible citizens?

Bharat literally means those who strive for the highest enlightenment and so our culture is based on the fourpurusartha or human aspirations: Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha, that is to say by “fair and ethical conduct”, that is to say “Dharma and our respective duties, Swadharma or kartavya‘,’ win ‘and’ enjoy ‘, in order to stay on the optimal path towards the achievement of the highest human goal, perfection, freedom, etc. Thus, the purpose of education and religions is to establish us in our respective spiritual practices. that in and through our vocation we can strive to harmonize both “material prosperity” and “spiritual growth” to achieve the highest enlightenment, which is the true goal of all religions and education.

Mahatma Gandhi, in his “Hind Swaraj”, affirms that our seers and sages have laid the foundations of our national unity and our Indian nation by establishing pilgrimage centers all over India. Secularism, according to Gandhiji, was to be “God-based” with an education focused on “putting our senses under our control and helping to imbue ethical behavior in our lives”; by “force of love” or “force of the soul”. He asserts that Bharat, the ancient Indian civilization, is suitable to be the true civilization, which he defines as that “mode of conduct which indicates to man the path of duty”. He adds that moral behavior is nothing more than “mastery of one’s mind.”

He admits that today modern India is moving away from these time tested values! The modern school and religions have so far failed to work together to make us strive to be good, better, better and to be responsible and enlightened citizens! The educated and the elite in positions of responsibility do not commit to to fulfill their duties towards the samaaja; they are not inspired to work for the good of the samaaja, to feel ‘apanaapan, unity ‘with more and more.

The essential message of all religions is to inspire us to aim for the highest and the best by establishing ourselves in the habit of everyday life swadhyaya (Self-study) to know the highest and daily sadhna (self-development practices) to develop the powers and purity of mind to speak to the highest. If we don’t make young people walk the lane during schooling, we cannot have good teachers and without good teachers we cannot have good citizens!

Hopefully NEP will focus on inspiring us to work for samaja’s sake.
