LENOX – The Lenox Memorial High quiz team won the championship on New England Public Media’s “As School Match Wits”.
The broadcast on WGBY Springfield on Saturday night showed the home team victory over the Belchertown High School students.
The game followed the televised semifinals on May 15, when Lenox Memorial defeated Amherst Regional and Belchertown High defeated Smith Academy.
“Lenox Memorial and Belchertown were definitely the two best teams this season,” said Mark St. Jean, executive producer of the Westfield State University series. “But it was really good to see Lenox win a hard-contested league game because after the 2019 -2020 season qualifying round they were the number one seed before the playoffs. Unfortunately, those playoffs didn’t. never happened because of the pandemic. So it was good that they had the chance to come back and win this season. “
The series features high school teams from western New England in an academic performance competition. Participation is open to public and private high schools in western New England.
“This season of ‘As Schools Match Wits’ has been very rewarding for us – the fact that the students have had the opportunity to compete,” said Matthew Gottfried and Charles Mattina, pedagogical advisers at Lenox Memorial. “We were extremely lucky to have an amazing group of four kids, down to three for each game, and they worked their butt to make it to the final under the most difficult circumstances. They are delighted and we are both delighted.
The team captain was Fiona Mathews, a junior, with members Ely Carroll and Daniel Munch, both senior. The alternate member of the team is Ted Yee.
