Ascension Illinois Medical Group Gain ready-to-use healthcare workers

CHICAGO, September 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — In partnership with Ascension Illinois Medical Group, Oak Point University is pleased to announce the successful completion of its first cohort of the Physician Assistant Career Accelerator Program last week. The inaugural cohort of 10 learners began the six-month hybrid work/study program last March. Learners start out with full-time medical assistant (MA) jobs and are eligible to take the licensed medical assistant exam to become certified medical assistants.

An MA works in a doctor’s office or outpatient clinic, providing administrative support and patient care to doctors and nurses. Oak Point University’s Partner Solutions business-to-business educational model helps fill gaps in today’s healthcare workforce while creating pathways for qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds to achieve their healthcare goals.

Ascension Illinois Medical Group, like many healthcare providers, requires an MA. The priority is to educate and provide practical instruction to learners simultaneously to maximize their experiences; teaching takes place in clinics two days a week and in classrooms three days a week. While participating in the program, learners receive full-time benefits, supplemental education, and earn a salary while attending school. Learners who complete the program receive a full-time position.

Participants in the pilot program came from all walks of life, including recent high school graduates, parents, people in retraining, and people already in healthcare who wanted to further their education.

Health is struggling to retain workers and recruit new ones. Oak Point University hopes the Physician Assistant Career Accelerator Program benefits organizations while allowing potential employees to earn while learning, easing the financial burden of the cost of the program with the added benefit of guaranteed employment after completing the program.
