OSU swimmer and Dover high school graduate heads to Tokyo Olympics

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Hunter Armstrong, a rising junior on the Ohio State University men’s swim team and a graduate of Dover High School, has a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics as a member of the team swimming pool of the United States. He is the first Ohio State swimmer to be part of the US Olympic swim team in 65 years.

Armstrong made the 100m backstroke team with a personal best 52.48 in the final to finish second behind 2016 gold medalist in the 100 and 200m and world record holder Ryan Murphy, who won in 52 , 33. He was recognized and featured with the team on Sunday during the final races of the US Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.

Dover High School.

Hunter Armstrong, a Dover High School alumnus and current OSU swimmer, will travel to the Tokyo Olympics.

“We are incredibly excited for Hunter and the opportunity he now has to represent the United States at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” said Bill Dorenkott, Ohio Swimming and Diving Director. “He swims extremely well and is a short distance from the world record (51.97 set by Murphy in 2016). I think he will do some great swims at the Olympics.

Armstrong was a force for Ohio State at the 2021 Big Ten Championships where he placed third, according to Ohio State University Athletics.

He scored in seven events at Big Tens, including finishing second in the 100 backstroke, third in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 50 freestyle.


Dover High School.

Hunter Armstrong, a Dover High School alumnus and current OSU swimmer, will travel to the Tokyo Olympics.

A graduate of Dover High School, he attended and swam in West Virginia in his first grade before transferring to OSU for the start of the 2020-21 season.

The Tokyo Olympics kick off on Friday July 23 with the Opening Ceremony at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium. The Olympic Swimming Games are held from July 24 to August 1.
