Tecumseh high school principal reassigned after investigation

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh Public Schools is looking for a new high school principal after the most recent principal was reassigned to a different role following an investigation into alleged misconduct.

Dennis Niles is now the district’s director of operations, the district said in a news release. He had been the high school principal since November 2020.

The move comes after Niles was placed on paid, nondisciplinary leave in May while the district’s human resources department conducted an investigation. The district law firm participated in the investigation, the statement said.

A Tecumseh Police Department investigation found that Niles committed no foul play, the statement said.

The district found Niles’ conduct to be less than professional and he was appropriately disciplined in accordance with district policy, according to the statement.

The school board and Superintendent Rick Hilderley felt a change was needed at Tecumseh High School, the statement said.

“While Mr. Niles has been determined not to have violated any law, his conduct did not meet my expectations or the District’s standards of professionalism,” Hilderley said in the statement. “It’s important that our students are not subjected to anything that might make them feel uncomfortable.”

Niles will now undergo refresher training on proper and professional driving, according to the statement.

“As we enter the new school year, the district will strongly reiterate the conduct and ethics policies to our staff set forth by the school board,” Hilderley said.

With the title of Director of Operations, Niles will oversee the maintenance, custodial and technology departments. He will also oversee the operations of the Tecumseh Community Pool.

Niles is on his second stint with the Tecumseh School District. Previously, he served as the high school’s vice principal from 2002 to 2012 and left the district on good terms.

Prior to returning to Tecumseh, Niles was the middle and high school principal of Mio AuSable Schools from 2018 to 2020. He was also the building and grounds supervisor for that district. He also served as athletic director and oversaw all Individualized Education Program meetings for students in grades six through 12.

The search for a new high school principal is underway, the district said. Greg Dolson will remain the high school’s assistant principal and head coach of the varsity football team.
