West High School Wins ‘Us the People’ Regional Congressional Hearings

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) – An event with nearly 250 local high school students was tested on the United States Constitution during the annual “We the People” congressional hearings at Golden Valley High School.

West High School won the regional competition and will advance to the State Championships on February 5, 2022.

The competition, which was hosted by the Kern County School Superintendent’s Office, consisted of teams competing for a chance to win the 21st or 23rd Congressional District title.

Centennial, East, South, Liberty, Ridgeview, and West High Schools made up the 23rd Congressional District, while those representing the 21st Congressional District were teams from Arvin, Golden Valley, and Mira Monte.

Each team individually presented testimony in two sets of six mock Congressional hearings. Congressional committees, made up of academics and civic leaders, asked students one of three study questions before the competition.

Each team had four minutes to present their testimony. Then, for an additional six minutes, the teams responded to questions posed by the judges regarding the constitutional questions raised by the events of history. The combined totals of the team’s six units determined the winner.
