CAMP ZAMA, Japan (November 2, 2021) – The reopening of a building at the American High School in Zama after a four-year renovation process will allow the school to once again use the building’s many classrooms for teaching students and other activities.
ZMHS celebrated the reopening of Bldg. 913 with a ceremony on Nov. 1 that included guests and speakers such as the Director of Education Activity of the Department of Defense and the commanders of the US Army in Japan and the US Army Garrison in Japan.
In his remarks, USAG Japan Commander Col. Christopher L. Tomlinson said the renovation was a well-executed project that served as the latest example of how the Camp Zama and DoDEA school system takes care of families. of the Zama camp.
“As a Garrison Commander, taking care of families is one of my priorities,” said Tomlinson. “Seeing all the hard work that has gone into the entire rebuilding and refurbishment process is a moment of pride. “
Two ZMHS student body members also spoke at the event, representing the first group of beneficiaries who will be able to use Bldg. 913.
Natalie Purvis, president of the sixth grade class, was part of the first sixth grade class that moved from elementary to middle school this year. She said that while there were many unknowns and questions that she and her classmates had as they prepared for the transition, the older students at ZMHS were very helpful in their adaptation to their new school.
“ZMHS students overcome challenges together,” said Natalie. “Zama is a great school, [and] this building is a great addition.
Charlotte Patterson, a senior president and student, said nothing about a military base stays the same. People are leaving, buildings are demolished and new ones are being rebuilt, she said.
“But one constant is the type of students the military creates.” Patterson said. “ZMHS students know how to be resilient. “
The ceremony represented this resilience of ZMHS students past, present and future, Patterson said.
Lois Rapp, DoDEA Pacific’s Director of Student Excellence, expressed gratitude to attendees saying that each of them helped make the renovation a successful project.
The updated building will also serve as a recruiting tool for Camp Zama to show that ZMHS is a great place for children, Rapp said.
“We have created a great environment for our students,” said Rapp.
